Practical phonics for Classroom Teachers
This practical course is designed for the classroom teacher wanting to use modern phonics as part of their literacy programme or literacy classes. The course includes a correspondence component (Literacy through Phonics) and five workshops (over six days).
The practical workshops include how to:
- assess a class for 'literacy gaps' using the About Words Literacy Assessment
- give explicit instruction in reading and spelling
- teach comprehension and vocabulary extension
- use a systematic logical approach to teaching reading and spelling
- set and achieve measurable spelling and reading goals for all students
- create an environment that fosters reading and spelling for all students
- make the most of parent help and Teacher Aides
- spend less time preparing and more time teaching literacy
