Welcome
Every student literate!
"The literacy problem in New Zealand is vast and for those working in it there seems no resolution. People involved in evidence based research have identified a solution and that is phonics. For those involved in the problem, this is little more than a theory, for it is not easy to find and implement a programme in which every student benefits.
We are the link connecting the 'theory' to ‘every student literate’."
Maree Llewellyn, 2009
About Words provides training and resources for teachers and other New Zealanders wanting to teach spelling and reading using modern phonics.
About Words is committed to improving literacy (spelling and reading) standards in New Zealand. We have proven this can be achieved through phonics - the study of English sounds and their spellings. The phonics system About Words uses is known as modern phonics.
Modern phonics teaches reading through explicit instruction in the spelling of English sounds, using a logical and structured five level system. This system has proved effective for all students regardless of age or background, including those with dyslexic tendencies or learning difficulties.
