Practical Phonics for Tutors
Trainees undertake the correspondence course (Literacy through Phonics). Included in the training are five practical workshops.
The workshops include:
- assessment using the About Words Literacy Assessment
- giving explicit instruction in reading and spelling
- teaching comprehension and vocabulary extension
- setting the scene for tuition
- the use of teaching aids
- explanation and demonstration of resources
- getting started with a student
- recording journal entries
- how to teach spelling
Resources and materials provided at the workshops include:
- New Zealand Fern Readers (50 books)
- Practical Phonics Workbooks (6 books)
- Phonogram Dictionary and spelling rules
- Fun Fit
- Phonogram Alphabet

Having completed Practical Phonics for Tutors trainees are certified to tutor literacy using resources from About Words. Tutors are free to provide this service on their own terms.
