Spelling and Reading Specialist

Maree Llewellyn is the Managing Director of About Words, a Cambridge-based company specialising in literacy solutions through modern phonics.

When one of her sons failed to learn how to read at school, Maree sought help from a private tutor who used a phonics-based system. Her son quickly learned to read with this system. This experience led to her interest in literacy, and in 2002 she completed a course in teaching literacy in Australia before training with the Australian-based creators of the course.

Maree then worked on a voluntary basis at her local primary school with children who were experiencing reading difficulties. As a result of her success with these students, the RTLB (Resource Teachers: Learning and Behaviour) employed Maree to teach selected students who had failed to learn to read through any other method.

When taught using the modern phonics system, all of these students were successful in learning to read and spell.

An increasing demand for private tuition in spelling and reading resulted in the establishment of a private practice, About Words.  Under her tuition, more than 100 students - school students, adults, and those for whom English is a second language - have experienced success.

Having proved that modern phonics is a highly effective system, Maree is now training New Zealanders to become successful literacy tutors.  Enquire now
